Extended reality

Extended reality for leadership training: what it can and cannot do

Immersive simulations are good at rehearsal and empathy. They are not a replacement for coaching or experience.

Extended reality (XR) is the umbrella term for virtual, augmented and mixed reality. In management development it is most often used to simulate situations that are difficult, costly or risky to practise for real.

Where it helps

  • Rehearsing difficult conversations in a safe setting.
  • Walking through emergency or safety procedures.
  • Seeing a process, a site or a product from another person's point of view.
  • Training teams who are in different places at the same time.

Where it does not

Immersion is not the same as learning. A headset session without a clear objective, a skilled facilitator and a debrief tends to be memorable and forgettable at the same time. Treat XR as one tool inside a programme, not as the programme.

Questions to ask a provider

  • What specific behaviour or skill is this meant to change?
  • How will we know that it did?
  • What hardware, space and support does a group session need?
