Ethical AI: five questions every board should ask

You do not need to be technical to oversee AI well. You need to ask good questions and expect clear answers.

Boards are increasingly asked to approve AI initiatives that they did not design and cannot inspect. Oversight does not require technical depth; it requires a habit of asking the same few questions every time.

The five questions

  • What decision does this system make or influence, and who is affected by it?
  • What data was it built on, and is that data representative of the people it will serve?
  • How do we find out if it is treating some groups worse than others?
  • Who can a customer or employee appeal to when they disagree with an outcome?
  • What is our plan, and our cost, if we have to stop using it?

Clear answers are the point

If management cannot answer in plain language, that is information in itself. Ask for the answers in writing, keep them on file and revisit them when the system or the business changes.
